This lesson was the result of everything I’d learned across multiple courses: start with a relatable story, keep the framework simple, and use product management (PM) scenarios for depth.
Challenge: Learners, especially engineers and others in technical roles, were struggling in meetings because they jumped right into topics without giving context. Audiences got confused, and people didn’t always ask for clarification, so a lot of time got wasted.
Bigger Challenge: Most of them didn’t think this was the real reason audiences couldn’t follow. So before I could teach anything, I had to convince them.
Solution: I started with a story to persuade them, then taught a simple framework. I called it “The First 8 Minutes,” a catchy name that also made people pause. The method was ICE: do Introductions, give Context, and set Expectations in the first eight minutes of a meeting.
The stories and examples were all built around real project and product discussions. Learners from different roles, some quite senior, appreciated seeing how it worked in an actual project.
Result: The video reached over 50k views, 2.5k likes, and 5k saves. Its save rate was in the top 0.01% of videos on the platform at the time.
PM parallels: It reminded me that building a useful product is only part of the work. People first need to recognize the problem it solves. A relatable story helped establish that need, a simple framework made it easier to get started, and realistic examples showed how to use it in their own work.
